End-to-end encrypted budget apps for couples: a 2026 comparison

Which budget apps for couples are end-to-end encrypted, and which only promise bank-level encryption? A 2026 comparison built from each app's own pages.

Chart: who can read your budget, from each app's own security pages, October 2026. End-to-end: Actual Budget (if turned on), Budgero, Couples, Power Couple. No end-to-end claim: Honeydue, Monarch, YNAB.

Only a few budget apps for couples are end-to-end encrypted, which means the company running the app can't read your numbers. Going by their own pages in October 2026, Budgero, Couples and Power Couple are, and Actual Budget is once you switch it on. Honeydue, Monarch and YNAB encrypt your data on the way to their servers and on their disks. That protects it from outsiders, not from the company that holds the keys. I built Power Couple; every claim about the other apps links to that app's own page.

Key Takeaways

  • End-to-end encryption means only you and your partner hold the key. "Bank-level" or "256-bit" encryption usually means the company holds it.
  • End-to-end, per their own pages. Budgero, Couples and Power Couple, and Actual Budget as an option.
  • Honeydue, Monarch and YNAB describe encryption in transit and at rest, and none of them claims end-to-end encryption. YNAB says its staff can access your data when you ask or when the law requires it.
  • If nobody else holds the key, nobody else can rescue a forgotten password. Keep the recovery code the app gives you.

What does end-to-end encrypted mean for a budget app?

End-to-end encryption means your entries are encrypted on your phone with a key that never reaches the company's servers. The server stores and syncs data it can't read, and only the devices that hold the key, yours and your partner's, can open it.

Most finance apps describe something else. Encryption in transit, between your phone and their server, and at rest, on their disks. That stops someone who intercepts the connection or steals a hard drive. The company keeps the keys, which is how it categorizes your transactions, answers support tickets and responds to a court order.

Two more setups come up in this market. Local-only apps never send your budget anywhere, so there's nothing to share with a partner unless you share the device. Self-hosted apps run on a server you control, and whoever runs that server can read the data unless end-to-end encryption is on.

Which budget apps for couples are end-to-end encrypted?

The first four claim end-to-end encryption; the other five describe encryption in transit and at rest.

App Who can read your budget, per its own pages Each partner on their own login? Bank connection
Actual Budget Only someone with your encryption password, once you turn end-to-end encryption on (sync docs) Yes, on a self-hosted server with OpenID sign-in (multi-user docs) Optional; bank sync tokens aren't covered by the encryption
Budgero "Budgero cannot read its contents". Data is encrypted on your device before it syncs (budgero.app) Yes. "each person gets their own sign-in and master password" Optional, in beta. "Budgero never sees your bank login or bank data"
Couples End-to-end, "nothing kept on our servers"; the two phones sync directly (thecouples.app) Yes, on your two phones, with no sign-up Not mentioned; you enter amounts yourself
Power Couple (my app) Entries are encrypted on your phone with a key we never receive; dates, categories and settings stay readable (privacy policy) Yes None, ever
CountAbout "Encrypted and never shared with third parties"; no end-to-end claim (countabout.com) Yes. "each partner gets their own secure login" Bank sync in its full plan
Goodbudget "Bank-grade 256-bit SSL in a secure datacenter"; no end-to-end claim (privacy policy) Budgets sync on web, Android and iPhone (goodbudget.com) Imports on Premium; bank data through Plaid
Honeydue "Securely encrypted in 256 bits, both in transit and in storage"; no end-to-end claim (security) Yes; you "choose what you want to share" (honeydue.com) Through Plaid
Monarch Encrypted "at rest and in transit"; no end-to-end claim (security) Yes, "partners will each have their own login", at no extra cost (for couples) Read-only, through third-party data providers
YNAB Encrypted "at rest and in transit"; staff access your data when you ask or when the law requires it (security) Yes, YNAB Together, up to six people (YNAB Together) Read-only, through Plaid or MX

A few things the table can't show:

  • Actual Budget is open source and runs on a sync server you set up, and its docs say plainly that "you will not be able to recover your data if you forget your encryption password."
  • Budgero works in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer, keeps each account in its own currency, and costs $4 a month or $35 a year after a 35-day free trial. It's open source and free to self-host.
  • Couples is a private messenger and planner for two that also does shared budgets and who-owes-who. Its page doesn't state a price.
  • Local-only options, if you don't need to share. BudgetVault stores everything in your browser with no account, and SenticMoney keeps one database file on your Windows or Mac computer. Neither page mentions sharing a budget between two phones (BudgetVault, SenticMoney).

How I compared

I analyzed each app's own security, privacy and help pages on 21 October 2026, and every row links to them. An app gets a claim only when its own page makes it; where a page says nothing, the table says so. I haven't installed the other apps, and I'll update the table when their pages change.

Why I built Power Couple this way

Power Couple encrypts the description and amount of every expense, your income entries, your savings goals and the written summaries in your reports on your phone, before anything is sent. The key is created on your phone and locked with your password, or with a passkey if you sign in with Apple or Google, plus a recovery code you keep. We never receive it, so we can't read your entries, and neither could anyone who copied our database. The date and category of each entry stay readable so the service can work. For a couple, encryption switches on once both of you have signed in at least once.

What Power Couple's server stores for each entry. The description, amount, income entries, savings goals and report summaries are encrypted; the date and category are readable.

There's no bank login at all. You add expenses by typing, from a receipt photo, from a bank statement file read on your phone, or by voice. Power Couple is free on iPhone, Android and the web.

What should you ask before trusting an encryption claim?

  1. Is it end-to-end, or in transit and at rest? If the page only says "bank-level", "256-bit" or "military-grade", it's the second kind.
  2. Who creates the key, and where does it live? End-to-end means on your devices.
  3. What stays readable? Every synced app keeps some data readable. A good privacy page tells you which fields.
  4. What happens if you forget your password? If the company can reset it and hand your budget back, the company holds a key.
  5. Does it need your bank login? A bank connection runs through an aggregator such as Plaid or MX, which sees your transactions whatever the app does with them afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Is Honeydue end-to-end encrypted?

Its security page says your information is "securely encrypted in 256 bits, both in transit and in storage", and bank connections run through Plaid. It doesn't claim end-to-end encryption.

Is YNAB end-to-end encrypted?

YNAB describes "industry standard data encryption at rest and in transit" and says its team doesn't access customer data in normal operations, but does when a customer asks or the law requires it. It doesn't claim end-to-end encryption.

Can the app company see our transactions?

With end-to-end encryption, no. With encryption in transit and at rest, the company holds the keys and can.

What happens if we forget the password in an end-to-end encrypted app?

The company can't recover your data for you. That's why these apps give you a recovery code or ask for a separate encryption password. In Power Couple, the recovery code you saved opens your key again.

Is an app without bank sync more private?

It keeps your bank credentials and transaction history away from data aggregators. Whether the app itself can read your budget is a separate question. Check for end-to-end encryption too.
